Pilosocereus boollii
Pilosocereus bohlei
No widely recognized vernacular name specifically for P. boollii. However, related species (P. bohlei) are sometimes called “hairy cactus”
Bring the beauty of the arid tropics into your own garden or greenhouse with these rare Pilosocereus boollii seeds. A collector’s treasure and a conversation starter, this striking columnar cactus boasts silvery-blue skin, woolly areoles, and an upright growth habit that makes it both architectural and deeply ornamental.
Whether you’re a seasoned cactophile or a curious hobbyist ready to try your hand at something unique, Pilosocereus boollii offers a rewarding experience in both cultivation and visual appeal.
Pilosocereus boollii is a rare and lesser-known member of the Cactaceae family, closely related to Pilosocereus pachycladus and Pilosocereus bohlei. Native to the northeastern regions of Brazil, it thrives in dry, rocky terrain and sun-drenched hillsides. In cultivation, it’s prized for its upright, candelabra-like form and soft bluish bloom, which creates a dreamy desert aesthetic.
This cactus is often admired for its glaucous (blue-gray) skin, vertical ribbing, and tufts of white or yellowish wool at the areoles. With maturity, it may produce night-blooming flowers in white or pink, attracting nocturnal pollinators like bats and moths in its native habitat.
As a true desert native, Pilosocereus boollii loves full sun and thrives in bright, warm conditions. It prefers 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily, and it benefits from warm temperatures and excellent airflow.
In ideal conditions, this cactus grows upright in a single column that may branch as it matures, reaching heights of up to 10 feet (3 meters) over many years. While it’s a slow to moderate grower from seed, the payoff is a beautifully sculptural plant that adds vertical interest to cactus gardens, xeriscapes, or container arrangements.
This cactus is best suited for USDA zones 10–11, where it can be grown outdoors year-round. In cooler zones, it’s best grown in containers and brought indoors during cold months. While Pilosocereus boollii can handle short periods of temps in the high 30s °F (~3°C), prolonged exposure to frost may damage or kill it.
While germination rates can vary, with the right care and patience, you’ll be rewarded with unique seedlings that develop that signature powdery blue tone as they mature.
Sowing Tips:
After germination, seedlings can be gradually exposed to more light and hardened off over time.
